How should I serve my Mummy Dogs?

Serve your mummy dogs with French fries, potato chips, or with a veggie tray for a quick meal.  If you live in a colder area of the country, serve your mummy dogs with a bowl of chili.  Have ketchup and mustard available for dipping!

These are a great snack, appetizer, or dish for your next Halloween party!

Mummy dogs are the perfect easy recipe for a busy Halloween day and are perfect as an appetizer for your party. The air fryer cooks the strips of dough perfectly and the hot dogs come out thoroughly cooked and juicy!

Variations:

Cheesy mummy dogs can be made by cutting a slit along the back of the hot dog and add cheese before adding the strips.

Try a twist on the Mummy Dogs by using Pillsbury Cornbread swirls to make mummy corndogs.

Mini Mummies – cut hot dogs in half or use cocktail wieners or Lil smokies instead of the regular hot dogs.

Mummy Family – use hot dogs or brats for the adults, and cocktail wieners for the wee ones.

What if I don’t have an air fryer? Can I use the oven?

The mummy dogs can be cooked in the conventional oven.  Preheat the oven to 375 degrees, place the wrapped hot dogs on a cookie sheet and bake 10-12 minutes, making sure the dough is thoroughly cooked (golden brown) and the hot dogs are warmed through.  Add the eyes after the mummy dogs are baked.

What if I don’t have any eyes for my mummy dog? Can I use something else?

Make your mummy dogs according to the instructions and simply use dots of ketchup or mustard for the eyes.

Can I prep my Mummy Dogs ahead of time?

Mummy dogs can be prepared earlier in the day, kept in an airtight container and then baked for dinner.

Make a big batch and save some to enjoy the next day!  To reheat, heat the air fryer or the oven to 350 degrees and cook until heated through.

Do I have to use beef or pork hot dogs?

If you prefer not to use beef or pork hot dogs, veggie and turkey dogs work well too.

Can Mummy Dogs be frozen?

Yes!  Assemble the mummy dogs (without the eyes) in an airtight container in the freezer until you are ready to bake them. They also can be baked, and after leftovers are cool, they can be frozen up to a week.

Ingredients:

  • Hotdogs – you don’t have to use beef or pork hot dogs. If you decide you want to, here are our family’s favorite! You can also use turkey or veggie dogs for a vegan or low calorie option! You can also make Mini Mummies by cutting hot dogs in half or using cocktail wieners or Lil smokies instead of the regular hot dogs. Another adorable version are the Mummy Family! Use hot dogs or brats for the adults, and cocktail wieners for the wee ones.
  • Can of crescent rolls – Pillsbury are our favorite brand of cresent rolls. But even generic, store brand will do!
  • Sugar eyeballs – you don’t have to use sugar eye balls for this delicious recipe, but they really do take the mummy dogs to a whole new level! Once you put the eye balls on, your mummy dogs really will come alive! They are so fun!

Remove hotdogs from packing and set them aside, you want the hotdogs dry. Remove rolls from the can and flatten each group of rolls by unrolling but not separating the group of rolls. Pinch close the perforations. Place between two sheets of parchment and roll flat to 1/8” thick. Using a pizza cutter or knife, cut dough into strips. Make strips un-uniform between 1/8” to 1/4” wide.

Wrap each hotdog in using the strips of dough to mimic a loose mummy wrap. The dough will expand slightly so beware of too much bunching or overlapping. The hotdog should be visible throughout. Open a spot for the eyes somewhere.

Place the wrapped hotdogs in the air fryer basket. I like to add parchment to the basket for nonsticking. Cook at 350 for 12-15 minutes until the dough is cooked…

Remove and place the eyes on the mummies. You can use ketchup or mustard as glue for the eyes. Let the eyes dry before platting.

Here are some supplies I used for this recipe!

In addition to the ingredients, I used parchment paper to place inside my air fryer. They are not needed, nor necessary. Parchment paper does make for an easy clean-up, as well as easy, no-quick removal from the air fryer. This is my favorite type of parchment paper for the air fryer!

As mentioned before, you do not need an Air Fryer for this recipe. You can place on a cookie sheet in the oven and follow the air fryer instructions. However, if you are searching for a new air fryer, this is the one our family has! It works well, is an 8 quart with a great size for our family of 4, and has a viewing window. See more information here!

I really love using a pizza cutter to cut the crescent rolls into thin strips. It was much more precise, and easier to do. Here are some great pizza cutter options!

If you like this recipe, you should try this one out! It would another great appetizer or snack for your Halloween party!
